The business federation Pimec presented a National Railway Plan this Friday, calling for the immediate segregation of passenger and freight tracks to resolve safety risks across Catalonia.

President Antoni Cañete highlighted the Tarragona area as a major bottleneck where commuter, regional, and freight trains share the same infrastructure. The proposal suggests reopening the Reus to Roda de Berà line to divert freight traffic away from coastal population centers.

"If I have to change the wheels on my car after 50,000 kilometers and we do 110,000, we will surely have an accident. That is what is happening to us now."

The plan also advocates for a new Catalan railway authority to oversee infrastructure management. Pimec reports that between 2010 and 2013, only half of the planned 11 billion euros in rail investment was actually executed, leading to the current state of network fatigue.
