The Popular Party in Tarragona, led by Deputy Elisa Vedrina, has requested the Central Government immediately reduce VAT on basic foodstuffs to combat rising consumer prices.

The proposal, presented this Wednesday in front of the Vila-seca Municipal Market, aims to alleviate the impact of price increases which, according to the PP, have been continuous over the last five years. The cumulative increase reaches 22.7% overall, and up to 34.1% for food and non-alcoholic beverages.
Specifically, Deputy Elisa Vedrina demands that the Value Added Tax (VAT) be reduced from 4% to 0% for essential products such as eggs, milk, and fresh foods. Furthermore, she requests a reduction from 10% to 4% for meat, fish, and preserves.
Vedrina, accompanied by local spokesperson José Martínez Raya, highlighted the dramatic price hike in common consumer goods, citing examples such as eggs (+78.7%), sunflower oil (+65.3%), olive oil (+54.1%), and milk (+53.9%).
This situation, according to the popular party, forces many families to substitute healthy foods with cheaper, ultra-processed alternatives. The Popular Parliamentary Group has already submitted six initiatives to Congress to maintain or expand these tax reductions, and has now registered a new non-legislative proposal urging the Executive to act immediately.
