The Catalonia Traffic Accident Statistical Yearbook 2024, published by the Servei Català de Trànsit, reveals that Tarragona province recorded 45 fatal victims, maintaining a significant weight in road accidents, especially in urban areas.

The new report from the Servei Català de Trànsit, which was delayed due to “technical problems,” allows for a comprehensive analysis of road accidents, including urban and interurban sections. Although Catalonia as a whole registered a significant decrease in road accidents in 2024 (9.6% fewer fatalities compared to 2023), the Tarragona region remains a critical point.

Tarragona registered 12 deaths in urban areas, representing 21.8% of the Catalan total, only surpassed in absolute figures by Barcelona.

Of the total 45 fatalities in the province, 33 occurred on the road, positioning Tarragona as the second region with the most deaths on the interurban network. In terms of accidents, 2,381 accidents with victims were recorded, 1,124 of which were in urban areas and 1,257 on the road, resulting in 258 serious injuries.
Accident rates are not uniform across the territory. The Tarragonès concentrates the highest number of accidents with victims, both in the city and on the road. The Baix Camp stands out for interurban mortality (12 deaths), and the Baix Penedès accumulates six deaths, a high figure relative to its population. The yearbook also identifies high-risk sections such as the T-314 (between Cambrils and Reus) and the TP-7225 (between Reus and El Morell).
The Servei Català de Trànsit emphasizes that, despite the global improvement, achieving the European goals of reducing fatalities by 50% by 2030 will require specific measures in territories with high relative accident rates, among which Tarragona province is recurrently listed.
