The Council of Ministers has authorized the Ministry of Transport to tender the construction works for the new Vila-seca railway gauge changer for an estimated amount of 25.13 million euros.

The facility, which will be managed by Adif, is essential to guarantee the continuity of passenger services on the R16 line, connecting Tortosa and Barcelona, as well as the rail connection with the Valencian Community.
This action is part of the adaptation works for the section between Castelló and the Vila-seca junction to the international gauge, which will be the only one operational in the future. From the Vila-seca junction up to Sant Vicenç de Calders, the installation of the third rail is planned to provide a mixed gauge.
Once the work is completed, trains coming from Tortosa will run on international gauge up to the Vila-seca junction and will change there to Iberian gauge. This change will allow the convoys to continue their journey along the coastal line to the Catalan capital.
The main works to be carried out include the construction of the gauge changer itself, the creation of a drainage network for rainwater evacuation, and the necessary electrification of the interchange.
