The Diocese of Urgell is embarking on a new organizational phase with the appointment of Antoni Elvira as the new Vicar General. Bishop of Urgell, Josep-Lluís Serrano, signed the appointments on May 28th, which will become effective on September 1st. Elvira will become the bishop's right-hand man, succeeding fellow Pallars native Josep Maria Mauri, who steps down after years of service but will remain involved with the diocese as Diocesan Delegate for Heritage.
Antoni Elvira, born in Tremp in 1970, possesses an extensive pastoral background. He was ordained a priest in 1996 after studying philosophy and theology in Catalonia, later earning a degree in Theology with a specialization in Youth Pastoral and Catechetics from the Pontifical Salesian University in Rome. He has served as vicar in Guissona and Balaguer, and as rector in Pallars Sobirà and in the parishes of Encamp and Escaldes-Engordany (Principality of Andorra). He currently also serves as Episcopal Vicar for pastoral action and director of the Diocesan School of Permanent Formation of Urgell.
Concurrently, the Bishop of Urgell has approved a pastoral reorganization that merges the archdiaconates of Pallars Sobirà and Pallars Jussà into a new entity named the Archdiaconate of Els Pallars. The aim is to enhance coordination among parishes and laypeople. The new archdeacon will be the current rector of Tremp, Father Alfons Velásquez.
Furthermore, the Archdiaconate of the Valle de Arán has been renamed the Archdiaconate of the Valle de Arán and Valle de Boí, incorporating parishes from Alta Ribagorça. With these adjustments, the Diocese of Urgell is now structured into seven archdiaconates: Núria-Cerdanya, Valls d’Andorra, Alt Urgell, Urgell Mitjà, Noguera, Vall d’Aran i de la Vall de Boí, and Els Pallars.
