The Coral Flors d'Urgell of Castellserà, one of the oldest choral groups in the Lleida region, is celebrating its centenary this year with a program of fifteen commemorative events, highlighting the premiere of its centenary anthem and the revival of its children's choir.
Founded in 1926, the musical group has been a cultural pillar for Castellserà, a municipality in Urgell with approximately one thousand inhabitants. Currently, the choir is composed of 30 women and 15 men, who are finalizing rehearsals for the celebrations, including the traditional Easter Caramelles singing on Sunday, April 5, where the centenary anthem will be premiered.
“
"More than a group of people who sing, we are a group of people with feeling, because we sing for the town. And the town without the choir, or the choir without the town, would not be understood."
The mayor of Castellserà, Marcel Pujol, has emphasized the choir's importance in the town's cultural life, noting that its founding has contributed to making the municipality a "culturally vibrant" place. The choir has maintained its activity uninterruptedly since its creation, with the sole exception of the Spanish Civil War period, between 1936 and 1942.
Initially composed only of men until 1969, women began to join as singers from 1995, and currently form the majority. Music teacher and violinist Sílvia Rufach directs the choir, aiming to foster enjoyment and the group's continuity. Furthermore, the Coral Flors d'Urgell has recently revived its children's section, with children aged between three and eight, ensuring generational continuity.
“
"The goal is to make people enjoy themselves and to get 120% out of them so they want to continue with the choir and keep celebrating anniversaries."
Among the centenary's prominent events, in addition to the Easter Caramelles, there will be a concert on Friday, June 12, with the Banda Municipal de Bellpuig, and a major central event on Sunday, September 20, which will include a sung mass, a commemorative exhibition, a choir gathering, and a popular aperitif. The choir intends this celebration to be a thank you to all who have been part of the entity and a commitment to the future of choral singing.
