A total of nine people were affected this Friday morning by an accidental chemical reaction at the Tàrrega municipal indoor swimming pool, which generated a toxic cloud and required the evacuation of the facility.
The incident occurred around 10:50 AM during water treatment, when incompatible products were mixed. This caused an exothermic reaction and the emission of smoke, according to emergency services.

"Due to an unfortunate human error, chlorine was mixed into the hydrochloric acid tank, which caused a chemical reaction and the emission of smoke."
The reaction generated a toxic cloud that immediately forced the evacuation of about sixty users and workers from the indoor pool and gym at the Complex Piscines. Approximately 50 liters of chlorine were mixed with about 400 liters of hydrochloric acid.
Of the nine affected, six suffered minor injuries (three treated on-site and three transferred to the Tàrrega Primary Care Center), while one less seriously injured person was evacuated to the Arnau de Vilanova Hospital in Lleida, mainly due to gas inhalation. The other two affected are awaiting assessment; all presented respiratory difficulties and throat irritation.

"An exothermic reaction occurred when chlorine was discharged into the wrong tank, which contained hydrochloric acid, generating a toxic cloud with high levels of danger. The evacuation and care of affected individuals were prioritized in a hot zone with dangerous concentrations."
The Generalitat Fire Department activated up to eight units, including the specialized GRIT (Technological Incident Support Group), and constantly monitored the chemical reaction. The high concentration of gases prevented access to the facility's interior for hours. Civil Protection activated the pre-alert for the PROCICAT plan due to chemical contamination, and the sports area remains preventively closed until further notice.
