Farmers Ramon Boleda and Eudald Boleda have been forced to uproot 97 pistachio trees in Verdú this 2024 due to severe damage caused by an ongoing rabbit plague.

The trees, which were nine years old, were just entering their peak production phase. The loss of these specimens across several farms in the Urgell region represents a projected financial hit of 150,000 euros over the coming years.

"In the last 5 years, we have already removed about 400 trees. These were trees that were just now entering full production."

Despite using protectors, the rabbits managed to gnaw through the bark, leading the farmers to consider more expensive electro-welded mesh. The plague is also devastating cereal crops, almond trees, and olive groves in nearby Preixana and Sant Martí de Riucorb.

"Forestry services haven't acted for a year due to bidding problems and bureaucracy, but rabbits don't understand bureaucracy."
