An unprecedented 2.7 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale shook Vallès Occidental early this Friday morning, with its epicenter in Sant Quirze del Vallès, though no damage was reported.

The Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia (ICGC) confirmed that the tremor was registered exactly at 05:39 hours, with the epicenter located at coordinates 41.53 N and 2.08 E, within the municipality of Sant Quirze del Vallès. Despite being the highest magnitude seismic movement recorded in the Vallès area to date, the ICGC assured that no material or personal damage occurred.
The shaking was slightly perceived by some residents in the area closest to the epicenter, including the capital of Vallès, Sabadell. Other municipalities where the earthquake was felt include Terrassa, Matadepera, Castellar del Vallès, Viladecavalls, Ullastrell, Rubí, Sant Cugat, Badia del Vallès, and Polinyà.

It is the seismic movement of the highest magnitude recorded in the Vallès area until then.

Mild or moderate seismic movements are not uncommon in Catalonia, although they rarely exceed 3 points of magnitude. The ICGC reminds that a quake between 3 and 4 points is perceived without causing damage, while those exceeding 5 points carry a high probability of impact. The last earthquake of a higher magnitude than this one was recorded last May in the Empordà, measuring 3.5 points.
