Centre d’Esports Sabadell is just one match away from achieving its fifth promotion to Segunda División in the 21st century. The 'arlequinat' team hosts Zamora this Friday at Nova Creu Alta (9 PM) with the objective of turning the tie around, having lost 1-0 last Friday at Ruta de la Plata. A large attendance and a vibrant atmosphere are expected to support the team in this decisive match.
The club's recent history already recalls four promotion successes this century: Mieres (2007), Eibar (2011), Marbella (2020), and Murcia (2025). However, the last promotions celebrated at Nova Creu Alta date back to the last century. We must go back 40 years, to May 18, 1986, when promotion to Primera División was achieved against Atlético Madrileño (2-0). A promotion to Segunda B was also celebrated at the end of the 93-94 season against Crevillente (2-1).
One of the most remembered promotions is from the 2010/2011 season under the management of Lluís Carreras. With a combination style unusual in the old Segunda B, the team became league champions. The backbone of Sabadell included players such as David de Navas, Toni Lao, Agustín Fernandez, Mikel Azparren, Juvenal Edjogo, Albert Puigdollers, Juanjo Ciércoles, Isaac Cuenca, Marc Fernández, and Ibusuki Hiroshi.
That team accessed the old promotion playoffs to Segunda B as group leaders. The draw pitted Sabadell against Eibar. At Nova Creu Alta, the match ended in a valuable 0-0 draw. In the return leg, at Ipurúa stadium, Marc Fernández scored the goal that gave the 'arlequinats' the lead, and despite Eibar's subsequent equalizer, the final 1-1 score certified Sabadell's promotion to the silver division.
The promotion was celebrated with a large parade through the city, culminating in Plaça Sant Roc. The team returned to professional football after 18 years. Sabadell managed to stay in Segunda División for four seasons, until the spring of 2015. The euphoria of promotion was experienced again in 2020, in the midst of the pandemic.
