Composer Benet Casablancas (Sabadell, 1969) will be honored in his hometown to celebrate his 70th birthday. This tribute includes the release of the album The essential collection (Columna Música), educational sessions, and concerts, coordinated by Joventuts Musicals de Sabadell, with collaboration from the Acadèmia de Belles Arts and the Fundació Bosch i Cardellach. The Fundació Bosch i Cardellach will also name him Membre Bàrbar de l'Any.
Casablancas, who has been appointed a member of the San Fernando Academy and has had works like Quadern d'Haikus premiered in San Francisco, will also receive the XX SGAE Award for Ibero-American Music Tomás Luís Victoria 2025 on May 26th. Additionally, the Franz Schubert Filharmonia will perform one of his pieces at the Palau de la Música on June 6th.
The tribute in Sabadell, starting June 5th and extending until the end of 2027, aims to highlight the composer's significance. Joventuts Musicals president, Joana Soler, emphasized his long-standing relationship with the organization, while the Councilor for Culture, Carles de la Rosa, described him as one of the most universal artists. The president of the Acadèmia de Belles Arts, Joan Llonch, underscored his importance to the city.
The album The essential collection, released by Columna Música, compiles live recordings of Casablancas' works from 1997 to 2021 by ensembles such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Casals Quartet. Sedes Garcia-Cascon, artistic director of Columna Música, noted the challenges in securing the rights for this publication.
The program of activities includes sessions like 'Tradition and modernity: a musical portrait of Benet Casablancas,' talks on music and painting, and discussions on the creative process between music and literature. The composer clarified that, despite the tribute, "I haven't retired!".
