The project Som ecodissenyadors (We are eco-designers), developed by 6th Grade students, combined art, technology, and sustainability, drawing inspiration from bio-architect Neri Oxman. The recognition was presented last Saturday at La Farga de l'Hospitalet de Llobregat.
The initiative arose from the need to improve the lighting in the school's library. Following the STEAM methodology (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics), students designed functional and aesthetically pleasing lamps using digital tools like Tinkercad for 3D design and the Micro board to program LED lighting systems.
A particularly unique aspect was the involvement of silkworms in creating the lamp structures, using their silk threads in a biofabrication process inspired by Oxman's research, effectively making the silkworms co-creators of the final product.
Beyond technical learning, the project also prompted students to reflect on the relationship between humans and nature, inspired by philosopher Donna Haraway's ideas. Students debated the responsibility involved in transforming the environment and the potential for collaboration with nature to develop more sustainable solutions.
