Emergency shoring work began this Monday to stabilize the interior of the building. Once completed, the unstable parts of the facade will be demolished and debris removed. The owners of the property will install protective scaffolding to allow pedestrians to safely use the street in the heart of Sabadell once again.
The building, known as Casa Homedes, is a 300-year-old structure that housed a historic haberdashery from 1890 until its closure a decade ago. Its Noucentista facade is protected under local heritage laws. The Patrimoni Gràfic Sabadell group successfully rescued the original shop sign, which has been moved to the History Museum for restoration.
Eight of the nine evacuated residents have been relocated by the council, while one is staying with relatives. Experts are currently assessing whether the entire building must be demolished or if any part of the historic structure can be saved.
