The future cultural complex in Sabadell's Plaça del Gas, expected to open soon, will feature three buildings and a total area of over 5,000 square meters, according to plans presented by the City Council.

This ambitious cultural project will be primarily distributed between the former Gas Museum, which will exceed 3,200 square meters, and the complex formed by Casa Grau and Casa Calvó, totaling approximately 1,800 square meters. The former Gas Museum will house a shop, the Sabadell History Museum (MHS), and the permanent collection of the Antoni de Montpalau Foundation.
The planned layout for the former Gas Museum includes an entrance with a shop and a temporary exhibition on the ground floor. The basement will be dedicated to the archaeological and pre-industrial collections of the MHS, spanning nearly 900 square meters, which include one of the most significant archaeological collections in southern Europe. The first floor, over 500 square meters, will focus on industrialization and the labor movement, while the second floor will retain the auditorium and offer workshop areas. The dress collection of the Antoni de Montpalau Foundation will occupy the entire third floor, covering 572.5 square meters, and the rooftop terrace will be reserved for cultural activities.
The City Council acquired the former Gas Museum from Naturgy for 3.2 million euros in the summer of 2024 and has allocated over 300,000 euros to adapt the space this year. Now, the unified museological and museographic projects will need to be developed, according to municipal sources.
On the other side of Plaça del Gas, the cultural complex will integrate Casa Grau and Casa Calvó, the latter known for housing municipal social services, which will relocate to Vapor Pissit. This complex will receive a five-million-euro non-repayable contribution from the Banc Sabadell Foundation, as recently announced.
Casa Grau will feature an entrance with a bar on the ground floor, utilizing the courtyard, and a children's area. Casa Calvó will be entirely dedicated to the Art Museum, with 554 square meters on the first floor and 515 square meters on the second. This section will be limited to the ground floor and two upper floors, unlike the former Gas Museum, which includes a basement, three floors, and a rooftop.
The new Art Museum will not replace the current headquarters at Casa Turull but will complement it. Sources close to the project have confirmed that the new cultural complex will display private pictorial works from Banc Sabadell. In autumn 2024, the Banc Sabadell Foundation committed to providing access to 500 works from its art collection, focusing on modern and contemporary Spanish art, including its most valuable and cataloged pieces.
