Subsoil instability forces closure of areas in Terrassa's Plaça del Gas

The City Council restricts access for safety pending a technical study that will determine if the entire public square needs to be rebuilt.

The Terrassa City Council restricted access to areas of the Plaça del Gas as a preventive measure in early January, awaiting a technical study to clarify whether subsoil instability requires the complete reconstruction of the space.

The Associació de Veïns del Segle XX fears that the detected settlements cannot be solved with a simple reinforcement, but rather require total reconstruction due to structural damage. The problem stems from two sources: the flow of subterranean water, especially near Pare Font street, and the constant passage of heavy trucks that have used the already urbanized square as a route for adjacent construction work.

"Perhaps they have to redo the whole thing. A study is being carried out to determine the extent of the damage. Once known, they will say whether only half the square needs repairing or if it needs to be completely rebuilt, which is what might end up happening."

The Terrassa council reminds the public that the works are privately promoted and that the developer must present the results of the technical study and the definitive repair proposal in early this year. Residents regret that, after 18 years of demanding the space, they still cannot fully enjoy it.
The history of the site, which housed the old gas factory, has accumulated setbacks since 2011, including the discovery of a tar deposit and work stoppages in 2022 due to heritage remains and water leaks. Now, residents anticipate a debate over who should bear the cost of the repair, whether the urbanization promoter (Metrovacesa) or the builders of the apartment blocks.
