The overall increase in consumption, which rose from 9.5 to 10.07 million cubic meters, is mainly due to growth in the industrial and municipal sectors, as well as demographic expansion. Nearly 80% of this total, 7.9 million cubic meters, corresponds to domestic use (showering, cooking, washing machine).
Despite the overall increase, the company Aigües Sabadell highlights citizen awareness, as domestic consumption per inhabitant per day in Sabadell is 95 liters, significantly below the Vallès average (116 liters/inhabitant/day), according to Catalan Water Agency data from 2024.
Regarding usage categories, industrial consumption grew by a notable 18.5% and municipal consumption surged by 32.2% during 2025. The only category that experienced a decrease was commercial use, with a drop of over 6%, falling from 990,000 to 930,000 cubic meters.
Regenerated water was key for alternative uses during the drought.
The distribution of regenerated water, which totaled 79,665 cubic meters in 2025 (11% less), is consolidating as a key strategy. Currently, 55% of the water consumed by businesses and industries in the Sant Pau de Riu Sec industrial park is already regenerated.
Furthermore, the future water treatment plant in Sabadell will allow the city to cover up to 10% of demand with its own water, sourced from wells and mines, thereby reducing dependence on Aigües Ter Llobregat (ATL). Regenerated water from the Riu Sec treatment plant is expected to be distributed during the first half of 2026.
