Jesús Castillo, an economist and university professor residing in Sant Cugat del Vallès, was released from Yare prison in Venezuela after five months of political confinement, his family confirmed.

The family of Jesús Castillo, who denounced his “kidnapping by the Maduro regime” on August 31, 2025, confirmed his release. However, the economist remains under precautionary measures, requiring periodic reporting and a strict prohibition from leaving Venezuela.
Castillo’s release is part of a rapid wave of political prisoner releases in the South American country. This process accelerated after the United States captured former president Nicolás Maduro and his wife in early January, transferring them to be tried.
This dynamic has allowed the release of hundreds of detainees held for political reasons, often subject to similar precautionary measures. These movements occur in the context of a general amnesty announced by President Delcy Rodríguez, the details of which are still pending confirmation.
Castillo, an economist and university professor, had traveled to Venezuela before the presidential elections on July 28 to resolve personal and academic matters. His trip also related to his political commitment as coordinator of the opposition party Vente Venezuela in the state of Mérida.
