The consultation on the continuity of the bike lane in Alfou concluded with 912 participants out of a total of 1,601 registered voters. The results indicate that 79.6% of the votes favored removing the infrastructure, while 20.4% voted to keep it. In response to this outcome, the City Council will respect the decision expressed by the residents and proceed with the removal of the bike lane, which was implemented this summer, aiming to restore the street's original configuration.
The bike lane was the most popular proposal in the 2023 participatory budgeting process, intended to promote safer and more sustainable mobility and improve connections with surrounding municipalities. The project was executed in 2026 according to technical criteria for sustainable mobility. The chosen configuration, featuring a bike lane on each side of the road, sparked debate and disagreement among some residents, particularly concerning the allocation of public space and parking spots.
In light of the opinions expressed, the City Council launched this specific consultation to allow residents to directly decide on the infrastructure's future. The consultation presented two clear options: maintaining the existing bike lane or removing it and reverting to the street's previous layout. Information regarding the consequences of each option was made available to participants before voting. The result reflects the majority decision among the votes cast, and the City Council thanks all individuals who participated in the process.
The City Council emphasizes that participatory processes involve listening to different opinions, explaining decisions, and accepting their consequences. In this instance, the consultation was opened for residents to express their decision, and the council will act accordingly. The municipality will continue to work on improving mobility and safety, considering residents' needs, technical criteria, and the feasibility of each initiative.
