Catalonia suspends schools and sports activities on Thursday due to severe winds

The Government advises against unnecessary travel and recommends remote work as wind gusts are expected to exceed 100 km/h.

Interior Minister Núria Parlon announced the suspension of educational and sports activities across Catalonia this Thursday due to a severe windstorm forecast to hit the entire region.

The measure, effective from midnight on Thursday until 8:00 PM, follows an extreme weather forecast. For the first time, the Government has activated the ES-Alert system for a wind event, sending emergency notifications to mobile phones to inform citizens about safety restrictions.

According to the Meteorological Service of Catalonia, wind gusts have already reached 140 km/h in areas like Vallès Oriental. The storm is expected to have two peaks: the first on Thursday, affecting all regions, and a second wave forecast for Saturday.

Civil Protection has urged local councils to review urban furniture and Carnival parade routes, as strong winds could cause trees and streetlights to fall. A coastal alert is also in place, with waves potentially reaching 2.5 meters.
