The Catalan firm OBO Estudi d'Arquitectura has achieved the nomination of a single-family house built in Sant Esteve in 2023 for the prestigious international Brick Award.

The house, included in the single-family homes category, was selected among the top 50 proposals submitted to the Brick Award edition, which received over 2,000 entries globally. The OBO firm, composed of three Catalan partners, one of whom is Oriol Troyano, originally from Sant Esteve, considers the nomination an unprecedented recognition.

"What happened to us is that it is an area with relative density where urban regulations mean neighboring houses are very close and there are not many exterior views. Based on this, we wanted to build the house around the courtyard, so it could have longer views."

The building's design, featuring 106 square meters of usable space and a 40-square-meter porch, arose from the need to create interior views due to the area's density. The structure is organized around a rectangular central courtyard that articulates the four wings of the house, with access through the north facade.
One of the most notable features is its climatic efficiency, achieved through the unique arrangement of the brickwork. The architects decided to rotate the bricks so that the holes face outwards, acting as an air intake chamber, regulating lighting, and promoting natural ventilation. The final winner of the award will be announced during a gala held in Vienna in June.
