FC Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André Ter Stegen has suffered a new knee injury, forcing Girona FC to halt negotiations for his loan move during the current winter transfer window.

Marc-André Ter Stegen's sporting situation at FC Barcelona has become complicated following the rise of Joan Garcia as the starting goalkeeper. The decision by Hansi Flick and Deco to back Garcia as the keeper for the next decade relegated the German international to the bench.
Aware of the need for playing time to secure his spot with Germany for the 2026 World Cup, Ter Stegen had sought a loan move. His appearance in the Copa del Rey match against Guadalajara, made possible by a gesture from Wojciech Szczesny, served as a showcase for the winter market.
Girona FC quickly emerged as the best option, allowing the goalkeeper to stay close to Barcelona for personal reasons while addressing a need for Míchel's squad. Ter Stegen was willing to reduce his salary to fit into the financial structure of the Girona club.
However, the injury that forced him to leave the training camp in Jeddah, ahead of the Supercopa de España semi-final against Athletic Club, has put the plans on hold. Girona's Sporting Director, Quique Cárcel, is now awaiting the results of medical tests scheduled for the player this Wednesday in Barcelona to determine the severity and viability of the operation.
