The newly formed Alt Empordà Agricultural Park held its first official meeting this Tuesday in Garrigàs, marking the start of a unified effort to protect the region's primary sector.

This new protection tool aims to preserve farmland in a region that boasts the highest number of farmers in the Girona province. The initiative seeks to provide dignified local employment while preventing the Empordà plain from becoming a mere logistics hub or a transit zone for heavy industry.

"It seems that everything must be crushed without any order. If we add the renewable energy proposals, it is the final blow."

Joan Caball · Vice-president of the Alt Empordà Agricultural Park
The park's leadership identified renewable energy infrastructure and industrial expansion as the main threats to the landscape. Specifically, they highlighted the impact of power evacuation lines in towns like Vilaür and the unnecessary growth of industrial estates that remain largely unoccupied after decades.
