The Catalan Academy of Gastronomy and Nutrition, under the presidency of Carles Vilarrubí, has recognized the trajectory of the restaurant El Motel, located on the outskirts of Figueres, with a special award. This establishment, founded in 1961 by Josep Mercader, has been a pillar in enriching Catalan cuisine and a symbol of Catalonia's desire to connect with Europe during the early days of development.
From its beginnings, when the N-2 was the main communication route, El Motel has remained a gastronomic reference point. Its continuous skill, the care in dish preparation, and the professionalism of its team, currently led by Jaume Subirós, have been key to not succumbing to fleeting trends. The Michelin Guide also respectfully cites the restaurant, despite its current location off the highway.
Jaume Subirós, hired by Josep Mercader when he was only 11 years old, has continued the family legacy. After learning the trade, marrying the founder's daughter, and taking over management, he now has the support of his sons, ensuring the continuity of this institution.
In addition to El Motel, Jaume Subirós also manages the Gran Hotel Almadraba, north of Roses, another notable establishment on the Mediterranean coast known for its views and its restaurant, especially for its rigatoni. Subirós's constant presence overseeing his businesses, from breakfast at Almadraba to dinner at El Motel, demonstrates his dedication and the essence of the Catalan hotel sector, which extends beyond sun and beach.
