The meeting took place after the awarding of the drafting of projects for the new railway bypass and the remodeling of the AVE station, at a cost of 3.7 million euros. The main objective is the unification of railway services in a single area, relocating the current conventional station to create an intermodal one adjacent to the existing high-speed station.
During the meeting, Adif presented the solution included in the awarded offer and emphasized the need to develop it within the planned alternatives study. This study will be the first document to ensure coordination among the various administrations involved.
This initiative follows up on a protocol signed in July last year between the Ministry of Transport, Adif, the Generalitat, and the local councils. It has been agreed to schedule a first meeting of the monitoring committee established in this protocol, which foresees an investment exceeding 150 million euros for the railway bypass and the station remodeling.
The projects currently being drafted include the installation of Iberian gauge track over 4.5 kilometers of already built platform, as well as the construction of 9.3 kilometers of a new double-track platform. The latter will involve the construction of a 1.75-kilometer tunnel and a 70-meter viaduct. The reunification of AVE station railway services is also planned, with a new platform and additional tracks.
The local councils have insisted on the need to study the functionality of the parking area, a request that Adif has committed to analyze. The construction of the bypass will improve the interconnection of high-speed travelers with the conventional network, concentrating both infrastructures west of Figueres and north of Vilafant. Furthermore, the remodeling of the high-speed station aims to become a benchmark and will improve services for Rodalies users.
The relocation of the infrastructure will also allow for the elimination of the two existing level crossings in the center of Figueres, increasing safety for both railway traffic and pedestrians. Adif has highlighted that the action could be co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
