The family found the 1958 deed belonging to the great-grandfather, Joan Corcoll, by chance during the pandemic. After registering the property in the grandmother's name, they visited the plot intending to plant about 200 olive trees, but upon leveling a hill, they uncovered tons of garbage.
“"It is incredibly sad, there is only filth everywhere, it is frustrating."
Residents of Palau-saverdera popularly knew the area as 'El Corte Inglés' (The English Court), as all kinds of waste, from rubble and toilets to car parts and pipes, were dumped there for decades. This land, which borders the municipality of Roses, has been protected since 1983 as part of the natural park.
Mayor Miquel Serra confirmed that the Town Hall has no official record of a landfill, as the events date back to the 70s and 80s. According to legislation, the council should require the owners to clean the space, although Serra has offered to seek an alternative solution.
“"If he does not have any document or agreement signed with an administration to dump rubble here, the Town Hall is obliged to require him to leave the land in good condition."
