The reopening, which allows passenger train circulation, comes after an agreement between Renfe and the train drivers' unions. Until now, only freight and regional trains were operating. The Department of Territory had set the resumption for this Monday, and Renfe confirmed the restoration of service from early morning.
Despite the resumption, some users at Gelida station were unaware of the news and only found out about the trains' return when they went to catch the alternative bus. Most welcomed the return of the railway service, considering it more practical and faster than road transport.
“"The train is better than the bus because I'll get there faster."
The agreement that allowed the service to resume was unblocked last week, ending a conflict between Renfe and the unions CCOO, UGT, SEMAF, and SF. The disagreement centered on the line graphics, which define the schedules and services for train drivers. Although Adif had confirmed that the double track in Gelida was operational since March 14, the lack of agreement with Rodalies drivers prevented passenger train circulation.
The accident that caused the closure occurred on the evening of January 20, when an R4 train collided with a retaining wall that had detached onto the tracks between Gelida and Sant Sadurní d'Anoia. The impact resulted in the death of a trainee driver and paralyzed the entire Rodalies network. Following the incident, drivers demanded safety guarantees before resuming service, leading to days of chaos and suspensions across the Catalan railway network.
