After nearly three months of incidents, the Rodalies commuter rail service in Catalonia is beginning to recover. This Tuesday, circulation on the R4 line was reopened at the Gelida point, where an accident on January 20 initiated the service crisis.
Renfe has announced that the R4 line, which connects Sant Vicenç de Calders with Manresa via Martorell, Barcelona, Sabadell, and Terrassa, is recovering the section between Sant Sadurní d'Anoia and Martorell. This allows for the reestablishment of the railway connection between Sant Vicenç de Calders and Terrassa. Towns such as Gelida, Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, Lavern-Subirats, La Granada, Vilafranca del Penedès, Els Monjos, L'Arboç, and El Vendrell once again have direct train connections to Barcelona without the need for bus transfers.
Despite this improvement, the R4 line service will not be complete. Between Sant Vicenç de Calders and Terrassa, the service is provided by train, while between Terrassa and Manresa, a shuttle train and a complementary road service by bus are in operation.
Similarly, the R1 line, connecting L'Hospitalet with Maçanet-Massanes, has recovered its full route, eliminating the need for transfers in Blanes. Frequencies on this line are also being restored, reaching eight trains per hour in each direction between Barcelona and Mataró during peak hours. However, an alternative road transport service between Blanes and Maçanet-Massanes will be maintained for the first and last services of the day (between 10:00 PM and 8:00 AM) due to extended infrastructure maintenance hours by Adif.
The R2 sud line continues to face restrictions due to improvement works in the Garraf tunnels, with schedules adapted by Renfe. The R3 only operates by train between La Garriga and Ripoll, and the R8 does not provide service in the Rubí section. These limitations persist just weeks before the end of April, the date by which the Secretary of State for Transport, José Antonio Santano, expected a return to normality.
With more than three weeks left until the aforementioned deadline, the commuter rail service in Catalonia is far from recovering.
