The Mayor of Vilafranca del Penedès, Francisco Romero, expressed his satisfaction this March following the Catalan Government's agreement to reactivate the Transversal Railway Axis (ETF) project.

The regional government has commissioned IFERCAT to update the technical studies for this infrastructure. Originally planned fifteen years ago, the line aims to connect Lleida and Girona through the interior, including a branch from Igualada to Martorell to improve access to Barcelona.

"It is very positive because it represents another step in a strategic project for the country and especially for Penedès, as it will decongest rail traffic in the Mediterranean corridor."

The ETF is seen as a vital solution to the ongoing collapse of the Rodalies commuter rail system. By providing a dedicated route for freight, the project is expected to significantly reduce delays and improve efficiency across the Catalonia rail network.
The government has allocated 5.46 million euros for the revision of the project's functional studies. This move aligns with the Catalan Railway Strategy, which also envisions a high-speed rail stop in Vilafranca, a long-standing local demand.
