The initiative, a first for the entity, involved constructing a traditional charcoal kiln at the Montferrer shed. The construction and management were overseen by expert charcoal maker and forest activist Saulo Pujolàs, who hails from Alp.
For the initial production, carried out last week, 3.5 tons of oak sourced from the Pyrenees forests were used. The wood was arranged conically with a central chimney hole, then covered with straw and a layer of earth to ensure slow, controlled combustion.
The pyre was active for four days, from Wednesday to Saturday, under continuous monitoring by the Integra Pirineus team. Despite adverse weather, 340 kg of high-quality product were obtained, achieving a yield close to 10%.
The limited and artisanal production of charcoal reinforces the valuation of the territory and the entity's commitment to promoting quality, local products.
The new product will be commercialized starting in 2026 under the brand “Carbó de l’Alt Urgell”, complementing existing business lines. This activity supports the social and labor insertion of people at risk of exclusion, the founding mission of Integra Pirineus since 2011.
