A group of vendors from the La Masuca Market visited the construction site of the new municipal market this Monday. This space is being renovated with the aim of becoming an open, brighter market, with stalls sized to current needs and areas for tasting local products.
The mayor of Igualada, Marc Castells, highlighted that the comprehensive renovation will offer "a first-class space, with areas to taste local produce and become a meeting point for the city." Castells compared the market to the "heart that makes the city and the neighborhood beat," situated within the area's transformation with the new Ronda Sud entrance and the university campus.
The project, costing between 5 and 6 million euros and funded by the Barcelona Provincial Council, is expected to be completed after the summer. The work is being carried out while keeping part of the market open to ensure the continuity of vendors' activities.
The project envisions a facility "open and generous in space, with abundant natural light and the latest in energy efficiency," including solar panels on the roof and large glass windows opening to the street. The new complex will feature around twenty indoor stalls and four to five outdoor ones, along with areas with tables for customers to eat on-site.
Some facilities, such as the two upper parking levels or adjacent shops at the new entrance on Sant Carles street, might become operational early. One of the commercial spaces will be managed by the Parc Agrari de la Conca d'Òdena, and a supermarket for complementary products will be located there.
Marc Castells emphasized that this transformation will make the market not just a place to shop, but an "epicenter of dynamism and economic and commercial activity for the La Masuca neighborhood."
