The Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC) has released a study in Barcelona showing that 75% of young people's social interactions in sports and leisure take place in Spanish.

The Joves i Català project monitored 700 participants across various youth centers and sports clubs. The findings suggest that while Catalan is used when instructors speak it, Spanish remains the dominant language for horizontal peer-to-peer communication.

"When they step out of the classroom, it is another world. Catalan is often perceived as a marked language linked to institutions."

Organizations like Òmnium Cultural are now focusing on sports coaches as linguistic role models. Additionally, there is a push to normalize Catalan in digital spaces, such as e-sports and popular video games like League of Legends, to bridge the gap between the classroom and social life.
