The Ministry of Health, led by Mónica García, announced yesterday that Spain performed 6,335 organ transplants during 2025, maintaining global leadership with an average of 17 daily interventions.

The data presentation was led by the Minister of Health, Mónica García, and the Director General of the National Transplant Organization (ONT), Beatriz Domínguez-Gil. The balance for 2025 registered 6,335 transplants, reaching a rate of 129.0 per million population (pmp), a figure the Minister described as "difficult to match".

"Spain is a world power of solidarity, in a society that works and with a public health system that works."

By organ type, kidney transplants remained stable (3,999), but a significant increase was recorded in cardiac procedures (390, 12% more), pancreas (+6%), and, very notably, intestine (+175%). Regarding heart transplants, the year 2025 saw the highest number of procedures in history.
The total volume was made possible thanks to 2,547 people who donated their organs after death, resulting in a rate of 51.9 deceased donors pmp. Furthermore, donation after circulatory death (asystole) once again surpassed donation after brain death, accounting for 56% of donors in Spain with 1,416 cases.
A notable fact is the generosity of people who request the aid-in-dying service (euthanasia) and express the wish to be donors. Since 2021, 226 individuals have donated organs under these circumstances, enabling the transplantation of 643 patients.
