The film, which is 60% Catalan production, thus culminates its international run that began at the Cannes Film Festival last May, where it won the Special Jury Prize. To win the statuette for Best International Feature Film on March 15, Sirât will compete against titles such as Un simple accidente, El agente secreto, Valor sentimental, and La voz de Hind.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Hollywood announced the final list of nominees for the 98th edition. Although the film did not make the cut in categories like best soundtrack or cinematography, it swept the technical awards at the European Cinema ceremony in Berlin, where it won five statuettes, including best sound, production design, and editing. Despite the success, it missed out on awards for best film and best actor for Sergi López.
“"We have to walk this path, we have to prepare ourselves to die, and the characters in the film find themselves precisely in the abyss of understanding that they are imperfect, questioning what they are capable of and how far they can jump."
Sirât, which means 'path' in Arabic, narrates the boundless journey of a father and son searching for their daughter at rave parties in the mountains of Morocco. The director, Oliver Laxe, trained in Barcelona, aims to bring human beings closer to loss, exploring real authenticity and understanding death as a “door to live with more dignity and intensity.” The film progresses to the rhythm of the experimental atmosphere created by musician Kangding Ray, with techno as its banner.
