Around 410 volunteer firefighters filed lawsuits against the Interior Department in Catalonia this February, seeking legal recognition and social security benefits similar to professional staff.

The group, represented by the Bombers Precaris en Lluita platform, claims they perform the same duties and face the same risks as professionals without access to sick leave or Social Security. Volunteers currently make up one-third of the firefighting force in Catalonia.

"When people see firefighters from a distance, we all look the same. The only difference is that some are civil servants and we are volunteers."

In the Barcelona province, 168 firefighters have joined the legal action, with 16 individuals linked to the Manresa court. The plaintiffs come from stations in the Central Emergency Region, including Sallent, Gironella, and Puig-reig.
Courts in Lleida, Terrassa, Granollers, and Figueres have already scheduled hearings between September 25 and November 5, 2026. The volunteers are also planning further mobilizations starting in March to gain public support.
