The city councils of Sallent and Súria, in Bages, have formalized an agreement with the Generalitat de Catalunya to cede land for the construction of new official protected housing, joining an initiative that includes 31 Catalan municipalities.

This collaboration, signed with the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, will enable the Government to individually tender the construction of approximately 566 public homes on 42 small plots. In addition to Sallent and Súria, other localities such as Òdena (Anoia), and Bellver and Fontanals de Cerdanya are also part of this first call for the public land reserve.
Most of these plots can accommodate 20 apartments or fewer, and city councils often lack the technical resources to manage the tenders themselves. Once the agreements are signed, the Generalitat expects to open the bidding processes before the end of April.
In the case of Sallent, the cession does not involve an empty plot, but an old building on Bisbe Valls street, opposite Plaça de la Pau. The council, which acquired the property in 2019, seeks a partial rehabilitation and has already carried out work to consolidate the facade. This particularity was highlighted during the signing ceremony.
For Súria, this initiative represents the first major public housing promotion driven by the Generalitat in almost two decades. Mayor Albert Coberó explained that the plot, acquired in late 2023, has the potential for 30 to 40 homes, and the agreement has already been approved by the municipal plenary.

"We approved by plenary to cede a plot in the middle of the town, which we bought at the end of 2023. The idea was already to build public housing there using whatever formula, and now we have found this one which is very suitable for us."

This action is part of the Government's Plan 50,000, presented last year, which aims to expand the public housing stock by 50,000 homes by 2030. The Generalitat, for the first time, will tender plots that are not its property, ensuring that developers comply with obligations for 75 years, after which the homes will revert to the city councils.

"Today's signing is the first step in a policy to build protected housing throughout Catalonia in smaller formats. In Catalonia, we want people who want to invest in housing, but we do not want people who want to speculate with housing."

Salvador Illa · President of the Generalitat
