A Tarragona court has annulled the creation of the public funeral operator FuneCamp in Reus, coinciding with the closure of the private firm FuneConca due to market pressure.

The Administrative Court number 1 of Tarragona has annulled the agreements made by the city councils of Reus, Salou, Vila-seca, and Constantí to launch FuneCamp. The judge ruled that the project's justification was invalid, favoring private competitors who claimed unfair competition.
The competitive pressure has led to the closure of FuneConca, a small private firm unable to survive the public operator's entry. Other companies in the Baix Camp region report an 'asphyxiating' increase in labor and tax inspections over recent months, which they view as retaliation.

"The ruling does not adequately reflect the reality of the project or the legal framework that supports it."

Reus City Council · Official statement
Reus City Council has announced it will appeal the decision to the High Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC). Meanwhile, private firms are considering further legal action to investigate alleged institutional harassment and pressure from local administrations.
