The Reus City Council has ceded a municipal plot to the NEWART Foundation to make possible the expansion of the NEWART Centre of Reus with the creation of a new open-air exhibition space. This initiative responds to the private foundation's proposal to incorporate the space adjacent to the current building, reinforcing municipal support for a leading cultural institution in technological art.
The center, known for exhibiting and preserving one of the world's most important digital art collections, will be able to expand its facilities with a project that includes an outdoor space for both exhibiting large-scale technological art pieces and holding interdisciplinary cultural activities, complementing its current programming.
In addition to its exhibition function, the new venue aims to become a cultural and social hub for the city. Planned activities include school visits, guided tours for sensitive groups, support for local artists, and initiatives to boost artistic communities and cultural spaces in Reus.
The project also includes the construction of a visitor parking area with charging points for electric vehicles, and the creation of a sustainable dry garden based on permaculture principles. Furthermore, space is reserved for a potential future modular expansion of the center.
The Plenary Session of the Reus City Council approved on February 20 the award to the foundation of the concession for the exclusive use of municipal land located at Regina Figuerola Rebull street, numbers 6 and 8. The concession is free for 50 years, with a possible 25-year extension.
According to the established timeline, construction for the outdoor space and parking must begin within a maximum of two years from the formalization of the concession and be completed within three years of obtaining the building permit. For the future construction, the foundation has ten years to formally communicate its intention to develop it, with construction starting within eleven years and finishing within thirteen years from the formalization.
