The anti-capitalists denounce that the inaugural show 'Trencadís' "insults the memory and language" of the architect.

The CUP in Reus denounced today, January 7, 2026, that the inaugural show of the Gaudí Year, Trencadís: De la Natura a la Llum, uses bilingualism and features Antoni Gaudí speaking in Spanish.

The party considers it “grotesque” that an event promoted by the local government, in collaboration with the Diputació de Tarragona and broadcast on TV3, is being used for “Hispanization”. Councillor Aleida López recalled that the architect was once arrested for speaking Catalan.

"We already know the intentions of Hispanization by the PSC, they are serious, but they do not surprise us. However, for ERC to allow it is extremely serious."

The CUP particularly regrets that ERC, which holds the Culture council seat in Reus and presides over the Diputació, allowed the show to proceed. They argue that the permissiveness of a pro-independence party is “extremely serious” despite their governing partners.
The anti-capitalists demand a public apology for the “falsehoods” disseminated, claiming they “present a Gaudí that never existed”. They also demand that all remaining Gaudí Year events be entirely in Catalan and supervised by local historians, and that the audiovisual material be removed from the 3Cat platform.
