Farmers from the Unió de Pagesos held a tractor protest in Reus this Monday to denounce the lack of aid from the Generalitat and water scarcity, leaving dead hazelnut trees in front of institutional headquarters.

The situation in the primary sector in the Camp de Tarragona is worsening due to the persistent drought. Farmers, who have been protesting for months, carried out a symbolic action last Monday with a slow march from Riudoms to Reus, causing traffic congestion.

"Without aid and without water, we will not be able to move forward."

The protest focused on depositing dry trees, collected in Riudoms, in front of two key institutions. The first stop was at the regional office of the Departament d'Agricultura (Department of Agriculture) of the Generalitat, which is responsible for drought aid. The second stop was at the offices of Aigües de Reus.
According to the Unió de Pagesos, the lack of water has forced the uprooting of over 1,800 hectares of hazelnut trees in the Riudecanyes irrigation zone. Farmers complain that promised aid has not arrived, and works on the Reus wastewater treatment plant regenerator have been delayed until 2030.
