The Left Ebro Irrigation Community started pumping fresh water this Saturday in Deltebre to recover 800 hectares of rice fields contaminated by seawater during last week's storm.

The emergency operation aims to wash away the salt that filtered into the soil after strong winds and waves breached coastal defenses. The Government has authorized emergency works costing 700,000 euros to repair the damaged areas near the Canal Vell lagoon and the Fangar bay.

"On an agronomic scale, the affected lands will suffer a delay. When the water is released, it will likely happen ten or fifteen days later here."

This environmental crisis has disrupted the annual maintenance schedule, which typically runs from February to April. Farmers are now waiting for a formal disaster area declaration while monitoring the impact on the apple snail pest, which is sensitive to saltwater.
