During the past month of February, a total of 9,454 allegations were registered in response to the dossier presented on January 28 by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge. This document proposes a maritime-terrestrial demarcation in the municipality of Deltebre, which would imply a reduction of the coastline without any compensation for the affected lands.
This proposal is not new, as a similar content was presented in 2023 but was allowed to expire without explanation. The current situation highlights the lack of investment in the defense of the Delta for almost seventy years, since the first constructions of reservoirs in the Ebro basin. The retention of sediments in the nearly two hundred existing reservoirs has caused the progressive disappearance of the territory's natural protection.
A nonsense that clearly evidences the null importance that this territory has for the administrations, both the State and the Generalitat.
The lack of action by both state and regional administrations is perceived as a clear sign of the little importance given to this area. Currently, Deltebre is the locality most affected by the onslaught of the sea, with beaches such as La Marquesa and Riumar having practically disappeared. It is feared that this regression will extend to the entire Delta, with the islands of Buda and Sant Antoni serving as clear examples of what could happen.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, the citizen mobilization with the 9,454 allegations represents a strong commitment from the people of the Delta and beyond, a cry that is hoped to be heard. Furthermore, the recent massive influx of tourists during Easter Week has been interpreted as significant support for this land.
