The acquisition of the device, costing 8,000 euros, aims primarily to detect if personal mobility vehicles (VMP) have been tampered with to exceed the legal limit of 25 kilometers per hour. The Local Police of Tortosa will use the equipment regularly on main streets, bike lanes, and pedestrian zones.
“"It is a matter of coexistence in public space, but also of safety, because the higher the speed, the more serious a possible injury can be."
The Mayor of Tortosa, Mar Lleixà, explained that this measure responds to the detection of an increase in users circulating above the permitted limit, which increases the risk of accidents.
Should speeding be confirmed, officers are authorized to immobilize and remove the scooter from circulation. Fines imposed on owners who violate current regulations can reach up to 500 euros.
The Mobility and Citizen Security Councilor, Francesc Vallespí, highlighted that the Tortosa Local Police is the first in the Terres de l'Ebre region and the second in Catalonia to have this technology. Vallespí stressed that the problem stems both from the tampering of scooters and the commercialization of non-approved models.
