The signing of the collaboration agreement took place at the stand of the autonomous city of Melilla, within the framework of the International Tourism Fair (FItur) in Madrid. In addition to the Mayor of Tortosa, Mar Lleixà, the agreement was signed by the Mayors of Palma, Jaume Martínez; of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo; of Ibiza, Rafael Triguero, and the President of the Melilla Monumental City Foundation, Francisco José Díaz.
“"For over a year, Tortosa has been leading a transnational candidacy to achieve World Heritage status for our fortifications, a necessary recognition to place us on the international tourism map."
This new institutional coordination aims to articulate the proposal that will be presented to UNESCO, as well as establishing the scientific and technical committee for the candidacy. One of the primary objectives will be to develop a European Cultural Itinerary Route, dedicated to the Mediterranean System of Hispanic Fortified Cities and Sites.
The First Deputy Mayor of Culture, Jordi Jordan, highlighted the importance of the agreement, recalling that Tortosa preserves over six and a half kilometers of walls, including the Suda Castle and the Avançades de Sant Joan. The City Council is about to restore these enclosures and has already prepared the Green Circuit of the Walls.
Furthermore, the Councillor for Tourism, Sònia Rupérez, announced the imminent arrival of a 100% electric tourist train, exhibited at the ILERTREN company stand at Fitur. This train will connect the riverbank with the historic center and the walls, recalling the old Carrilet railway line.
