The Lighting of Towers initiative, promoted by teachers from the Marratxí Institute in Mallorca in 2016, is held simultaneously across various points in the Mediterranean. Its dual objective is to raise awareness about the humanitarian crisis at sea and highlight fortifications as historical and cultural heritage. In Catalonia, the event is coordinated by the Institut Ramon Muntaner (IRMU).
“"One more year, the Célio tower, in the Remolins neighborhood, will be lit, but the Campredó tower will also be lit."
The lighting of the Torre del Célio will begin at 6:15 PM in the Plaça de Menahem Ben Saruq, featuring a children's 'carretillada' and the lighting of the turret by the Colla de Diables i Tambors Lo Golafre. This space of peace and memory honors the Hebrew poet, lexicographer, and grammarian born in Tortosa.
The program will continue at the Tortosa Museum with a concert by the musician Èric Vinaixa, dedicated to the poet Roc Llop i Convalia, coinciding with the International Holocaust Remembrance Day (January 27). Professor Emigdi Subirats will offer historical context on Llop's figure.
“"Roc Llop was an anarchist, teacher, poet, exile, and survivor of the Nazi concentration camp of Mauthausen."
Councilor Pilar Caballé also previewed part of the Democratic Memory program for 2026, which will include events on March 8, April 15 for the fascist bombings on Tortosa, and commemorations of the start and end of the Battle of the Ebro in July and November.
