The main objective of the meeting, held last Wednesday, July 29th, was to start outlining the activity proposals to be carried out in the coming months and, especially, next year, coinciding with the tenth anniversary of the twinning pact signed in 2017. This dynamic reinforces the historical relationship between the two coastal municipalities, marked by strong family, cultural, and social ties.
The mayors emphasize the importance of promoting activities that involve entities from both municipalities, fostering cultural, heritage, gastronomic, sports, and festive aspects. The aim is to encourage participation and contact between the communities of L'Ametlla de Mar and Palamós, with special attention to young people and the elderly.
Following this initial meeting, further encounters are planned with the participation of municipal technicians and councilors to finalize the proposals and establish a definitive calendar for the twinning activities scheduled for 2027.
The status of coastal towns with significant fishing activity has been a historical driver for the relationship between the two municipalities. During the first half of the 20th century, several fishing families from L'Ametlla de Mar emigrated to Palamós, establishing a community that has now surpassed the fourth generation and forms a significant part of Palamós' fishing sector.
Institutional contacts date back to early 1975, when a street in L'Ametlla de Mar was named after Palamós. In the summer of the same year, reciprocity was established with a street in Palamós being named after the Tarragona municipality, specifically the road connecting Plaça de la Catifa and the lighthouse.
