Construction work on the new bus station in Palamós, situated in Pla de Sant Joan, commenced in March 2024. This project, which culminates a long-delayed process, has enabled the relocation of interurban lines from Carrer de López Puigcerver in the town center to a site closer to the C-31 access roads, thereby avoiding heavy vehicle traffic through commercial and busy areas.
The need for a new station dates back many years. In 2018, the Generalitat commissioned the design of the construction project, confirming Pla de Sant Joan as the final location. Initially, the works were expected to be completed by the end of 2020, but various urban planning modifications and administrative procedures delayed the schedule.
The modification of the Municipal Urban Planning Plan (POUM) to reserve the necessary land began in February 2020 and was approved by the Territorial Commission of Urbanism of Girona in February 2021. Subsequently, the land was made available to the Generalitat for the station's construction, which was publicly presented in April 2022.
In March 2023, the Department of Territory tendered the works for approximately 2.8 million euros, with the intention of starting construction that autumn. Ultimately, the works began in March 2024, covering an area of approximately 4,000 square meters.
The new facility features seven platforms, a quick stop area, and waiting space for vehicles. The single-story passenger building includes a climate-controlled waiting room, restrooms, ticket offices, and vending machines. It also incorporates electronic information systems, public address, fiber optics, video surveillance, and photovoltaic panels for energy generation. The project received funding from the Generalitat and European Next Generation funds.
In June 2024, the Minister of Territory, Ester Capella, visited the construction site accompanied by the mayor of Palamós, Lluís Puig. At that time, the facility was expected to become operational in the autumn. Concurrently, the City Council initiated complementary works on Carrer de les Triadores and Carrer de les Remendadores to facilitate access.
Although the initial plan was to open the station in 2024, the timeline extended. By early 2025, the main works were nearly complete. The official inauguration took place on March 8, 2025, and the following day, March 10, the new station began full operation, replacing the historic stop on López Puigcerver.
With the new infrastructure, intercity bus lines no longer pass through the center of Palamós but operate from Pla de Sant Joan, closer to the main access routes to the municipality. This project marks a definitive step towards improving mobility and road safety in the town.
