The Barcelona-El Prat Airport is set to receive 3.2 billion euros in investment between 2027 and 2031, accounting for nearly a quarter of the total national budget for airport improvements in Spain.

The DORA III plan, unveiled by Aena president Maurici Lucena, aims to transform the facility into a 21st-century hub capable of handling 90 million passengers per year. The project includes expanding the runway closest to the sea and building a new passenger terminal to alleviate current congestion.

"Barcelona is key for tourism, the economy, and international connectivity. These investments will ensure the airport can absorb traffic for the next 30 years."

The expansion will be largely funded by a 3.8% annual increase in airport fees charged to airlines. This move has faced criticism from industry bodies like IATA, who argue it could harm competitiveness. Environmental concerns regarding the Llobregat Delta and La Ricarda lagoon also remain a point of political contention.
