The Olesa de Montserrat Town Council launched a new waste collection service for the street market on Friday, January 23, 2026, focusing on better management of cardboard, organic, and plastics.

This measure is part of the municipality's new waste management contract and aims primarily to prevent merchants from saturating domestic containers. Vendors generate significant amounts of paper, cardboard from clothing and shoe boxes, plastic packaging, and organic waste like fruits and vegetables.

"Until now, this waste was deposited in domestic containers, which caused them to overflow."

Ivan Carreira · Councillor for Environment and Sustainability
To facilitate the collection of the organic fraction, numbered bins are distributed in Plaça de l'Oli, where the food stalls are concentrated. Each merchant collects their bin at the start of the day and returns it upon concluding their activity.
Regarding paper and cardboard, three specific areas with containers have been set up in Plaça de Catalunya, Plaça de l'Oli, and La Rambla, near Plaça de l'Estatut. The Councillor for Environment and Sustainability, Ivan Carreira, noted that vendors can deposit their folded boxes and plastic packaging bags throughout the day.
This new service complements other contract improvements, such as the progressive implementation of closed, chipped containers, which began in January and is expected to be completed by May, along with on-demand collection for bulky items and pruning waste.
