The agreement signing took place in the Sala Tobies of the El Vendrell City Council. Participants included Mayor Kenneth Martínez, SomSardana President Xavier Treserras, and representatives of local entities such as Joan Morros (Dansaires del Penedès and Foment Sardanista Vendrellenc) and Xavier Mercadé (Lira Vendrellenca).
The SomSardana Sardana Capital Commission will hold the official proclamation of El Vendrell as the capital on March 21. The public event, which will serve as the opening of the capital status, will take place at 11:30 a.m. at the Auditori del Tívoli.
“"Who else could be the Sardana Capital? We have three historic entities to bring the sardana to the world…"
Mayor Martínez thanked the local entities for their effort and emphasized that the Capitality year will serve to keep the sardana “more alive and present in the streets than ever.” He recalled that well-known sardanas such as La Santa Espina or Sant Martí del Canigó are by composers from El Vendrell, and the main goal is to ensure that new generations know, value, and love it.
The 2026 program will include dances, concerts, gatherings, exhibitions, and educational projects, combining tradition and future. Xavier Treserras, President of SomSardana, stressed that the goal is for the city to be “soaked in sardana.” For his part, Xavier Mercadé, President of the Lira Vendrellenca, announced that the historic entity will dedicate its 25 sections to the programming for this capital status.
