The Local Police of Cunit have initiated an investigation to identify those responsible for abandoning a dog tied to a lamppost overnight in the town.

The incident occurred on Friday night, when residents alerted authorities that a young couple had tied the animal to a lamppost around 10:30 PM and left it there. The dog remained tied throughout the night until, around 9:00 AM the following morning, it was collected by an animal shelter.
During the hours the animal was abandoned, Local Police officers monitored it and provided water and food to ensure its well-being.
Currently, the Local Police are working to determine if the dog has an identification chip that could reveal its owner's identity. If abandonment is confirmed, those responsible could face charges for a serious animal cruelty offense, in accordance with the Penal Code and the current municipal ordinance.
Penalties for this type of offense can include fines exceeding 50,000 euros, prison sentences of one to six months, community service, and disqualification from owning animals. The new Animal Welfare Law establishes a strict limit of 24 hours during which a dog can be left alone.
